Do You Want to be a Binge Drinker?

February 6th, 2009

In the United States binge drinking is very common. There have been many stories in the news about underage kids’ binge drinking, and dying from it. Binge drinking is the most common among high school and college students. In a study at Harvard University 51% of the males and 41% of the females binge drink. The study concluded that it takes males 5 drinks and it takes female 4 drinks for it to be considered binge drinking. Recent research shows that a person who binge drinks or gets drunk frequently is almost ten times more likely to miss a class, fall behind in school, or injure themselves. The study explained that the students that binge drink do not realize how dangerous they are to themselves and others.

Curiosity is one reason underage students binge drink. Another reason students binge drink is, they just wanted to know what it felt like to be drunk. On the other hand, one side effect of binge drinking is alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning is when you drink too much in a short period of time. When [...]

Continental's "General Vibe" Doesn't Include Black People [Bars]

May 26th, 2009

At this point, I understand how clubs do what they can to control the climate at places. The rules against baseball caps and sneakers, etc. are generally to keep out a crowd they don't want. Most recently, as I waited to meet people for a newyorkers meetup that no one attended, I was told by a doorman that I could wear my cap forward or backward, not sideways, and I did so accordingly. I have no problem with rules. So I compromise and respond: "Where is your dress code written? I can remove the cap and I have a change of clothes inside."

My friends were both White. They apparently were wearing trendy "East Village" attire that consisted of Black jeans that stained of spilled mayo and black shirts with a patch that indicated that they worked at a restaurant that can be found in Times Square. The owner had nothing against what they were wearing, but when I repeated that I had that same exact uniform and could change into it, he repeated: "It's about the vibe. We have a regular clientele here. Once you're out, [...]

Head 2 Head : Kashi Go Lean Caramel Peanut Bar vs. Larabar Peanut Butter Cookie Bar

July 12th, 2009

Energy bars are a popular and growing category of snack foods that are a natural evolution of breakfast cereals. Sixty years ago we had time to sit down for a hearty breakfast with the family. By the early seventies, families couldn’t bother with the hassle and settled for a bowl of cereal with milk. Nowadays, many people don’t have time for even this, so they grab a cereal bar / energy bar / snack bar and a spill proof cup of coffee and hop into the car for the morning commute.

With so many bars to choose from, you may find yourself confused. All these bars tout health benefits from here to the 2012 London Olympics. However, there are some companies that try to maintain a higher standard than others, and today we’ll take a look at products from 2 such bars:

Hobokenpix: Blinding Neon!

July 19th, 2009

Stumbled across this photo in my (virtual) pile of “unsorted” photos the other day… and I recall nuggets of the conversation I had with my friend that was with me when we passed the 8th Street Tavern.

Some notable quotes: “Can I borrow your sunglasses?” - “Jeez, what is their power bill like?” - “you should do a post about this!” - “Would anyone know they’re there without those blinding neon lights? and lastly - “I bet they give Margherita’s a massive Xmas gift every year!”

PS - if you have images collecting dust on your camera or hard drive - send them in for eventual inclusion on Hoboken411! Please state how you’d like to be credited in your email, and a description - if desired!!
